CHALLENGE
Design an engaging information-led exhibition on a limited budget.
OUTPUT
Exhibition Identity, Illustration, Print
We were invited to design a public exhibition at Eton College titled Ancient Beings – an exhibition showcasing contemporary analyses of 32 objects, which span over 3,000 years of Ancient Egyptian history and culture.
We created an identity based on the idea of a rediscovered Ancient Egypt.
The design style is inspired by books found in the adjoining library printed in the Egyptomania period of British society. The academic and archeological style is echoed through the design of the accompanying catalogue, panels and invitations.
As part of the visual language we created practical illustrations, reminiscent of archaeologist’s field sketches to represent each artefact in the exhibition as well as four stylised hieroglyphs for the four sections of the exhibition – Gods, Humans, Animals and Plants.
The walls of the space are lined with beautifully hand-crafted wooden cabinets featuring upper and lower display sections. The artefacts were housed in the upper and we used the lower as surfaces to inset the information panels, which saved time on production and installation.
The exhibition title in the space appears like a mirage, receding and appearing as you move around the room. The effect was produced using extra-thin gold vinyl, which perfectly translates the material texture of the wall behind.
